Needing to win their final two games of the regular season, the California Cobras swept a doubleheader from the El Dorado Hills Vipers this past Sunday earning the Cobras a spot in the State playoffs set to begin this weekend in Palo Alto.

Pitcher Nick Young (Granite Bay, UC San Diego) was the starter for the first game allowing only one run and two hits in five innings to get the win. Offensively, Josh Dawson (Granite Bay, Mesa College) went 2 for 4, with a double and RBI, and Luke Gadow (El Dorado Hills) went 3 for 4 with a double, RBI and run scored helping to carry the offense in the Cobras’ 5-1 victory.

The second game went even better for the Cobras who beat the Vipers 11-5. Jameel Ziadeh (Granite Bay, American River College) went 4 for 5 and scored two runs.

This year’s Stan Musial Northern California State Tournament will be hosted by the Western Baseball Association (San Jose League) with Fontanetti’s as the host team. Beginning Friday, July 25th and running through Sunday, July 27th, games will be held at Baylands Park in Palo Alto, CA. The tourney will consist of six teams, two from the WBA Stan Musial Division (Fontanetti’s and Palo Alto Oaks), two from the Nor Cal Stan Musial (Sacramento Scorch and California Cobras), and two from Sacramento Rural League (Novato Knicks and Folsom Pioneers).

The Cobras will play their first game Friday morning against the Palo Alto Oaks. There is some history behind the Oaks’ organization as they play this their 58th season of competition. The Oaks are the longest running semi-pro baseball team on the peninsula, and they are the Western Baseball Association champion four years running.
